Wingate escapes in first round over Newberry 1-0

Box Score

WINGATE, N.C. - Wingate University senior defender Thomas Szvetitz (Valrico, Fla.) scored the only goal of the contest as the Bulldogs stayed alive in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament with a 1-0 home win over Newberry College Wednesday afternoon at the Wingate University soccer facility.  Newberry completes its season 9-7-2 overall.

A 2004 first team All-SAC performer, Szvetitz tallied his eighth goal of the season at the 81:22 mark. The scoring play involved all three of Wingate's first team All-SAC standouts. Freshman midfielder James Lavery (Belfast, Northern Ireland) sent a pass downfield to forward Benj Bostic (Wingate, N.C.), who found Szvetitz open on the left side.

Wingate bombarded Newberry sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Linn throughout the contest. The Bulldogs outshot the Indians 18-5, including 10-3 in the first half. Linn was up to the task, recording eight saves.

Bulldog redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brian Noell (Hickory, N.C.) notched his first career shutout for the hosts. Noell had three saves.

In the first half, the Bulldogs had numerous chances. Bostic hit the left post in the 14th minute. Lavery hit the right post in the 30th minute. On the afternoon, Bostic had seven shots, two more than the entire Newberry side. Bostic leads the SAC with 20 goals on the season.
