Newberry defends home after long road trip, defeats Pfeiffer 6-2

Box Score

NEWBERRY - After taking four out of a possible six points during a road trip through West Virginia, the Newberry men's soccer team returned to the Newberry Soccer Complex and played like they missed home, defeating Pfeiffer University 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon.  The Indians improve to 5-4-1 on the season.

It was an interesting game to say the least, as Newberry attempted their first penalty kick of the season, and played the Falcons up two men for most of the match, due to red cards received by the visitors.

Pfieffer scored the opening goal of the match in the 15th minute, when Jesse Powers (Charlottesville, Va.) scored on a free kick just outside the Indian box, after Newberry defender Miles Childers (Casper, Wyo.) picked up a yellow card for a hard tackle on a Pfeiffer midfielder.  Newberry answered with the equalizer just under 13 minutes later, after a Pfeiffer tackle resulted in a penalty kick for the Indians.  Chad Domis (Irmo, S.C.) took the kick, but was denied by Falcon keeper David Sherman (Hanover, MD).  Fortunately for Newberry, Sherman was unable to gain control after the nice save, as Indian forward Troy Pinckney (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) collected the rebound, and sent a shot past Sherman to notch the equalizer.

Pinckney finished the match with a hat trick, scoring three goals in as many shots.

The rest of the match turned into a nightmare for Pfieffer, as the Falcons watched two players, Davi Lorenzo (Bakersville, N.C.) and Craig Tucker (Dallas, Tex.), pick up the dreaded red card, forcing the Falcons to play two men down for the majority of the match.  Halftime was reached with both teams knotted at one.

Pfeiffer did a good job defensively for most of the second half, snuffing out several good Newberry looks.  Finally, in the 73rd minute, Domis controlled a fantastic ball from Ricardo Silveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and fired the ball past Sherman for the game-winner.  It was the first goal of the season for Domis.

The floodgates officially opened for the Indians after the Domis goal, as Newberry scored three more times in less than seven minutes.  Pinckney notched two of the aforementioned goals, along with Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) and Jason Wiggins (Charleston, S.C.).  The Falcons put one in as time expired, as Thomas Funk (Naperville, Ill.) scored with 20.7 seconds remaining in the match.

The Indians are back in action Sunday at 4 p.m., as they take on South Atlantic Conference rival #10 Tusculum at the Newberry Soccer Complex.
