NEWBERRY, S.C. – Coming off a heartbreaking, 2OT loss to #9 Tusculum on Saturday, the Lady Indian soccer team could have come out a little flat in Tuesday’s game against Converse College. However Newberry rebounded in fine fashion, pummeling the Converse All-Stars 6-0 at the Newberry Soccer Complex. The Lady Indians relied on the usual suspects in Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) and Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Tex.) to gain the initial lead; then padded the lead with some spectacular individual performances by a primed supporting cast.
In another record set by this particular soccer team, the Lady Indians recorded their sixth shutout of the season, a school best.
The scoring started in the 15th minute, as Woiwode found Tumblin on a breakaway in the center of the box. Tumblin, as usual, finished marvelously notching the game-winner. It was Tumblin’s fifth game-winner of the season. Tumblin wasn’t done, as just four minutes later, Woiwode again found her in the box for her second goal of the match. Adriana Farfan (West Palm Beach, Fla.) also was credited with an assist on the goal.
Then Woiwode got into the goal scoring mood, putting it between the posts twice in the match, once in the 23rd minute, and again in the 59th. Both goals were unassisted, as Woiwode relied on spectacular footwork to score both times.
Ashley Newsome (Greensboro, N.C.) scored the goal of the match in the 77th minute. Newsome found some space about 45 yards outside of the box, and proceeded to boot the ball with astounding force, past goalkeeper Katie Heos (Greer, S.C.).
Then, in a surprise move by head coach Juan Pablo Favero, Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) entered the game not in her usual position of starting keeper, but as a defender, dawning the number 21. Just 30 seconds later, on a Newberry corner, Beckerle left the ground for a header in the box, beating Heos for her first goal of the season. On the year, Beckerle has three assists (all coming from the keeper position) and one goal.
“Bouncing back form a tough loss is always important,” said Favero. “Our team went out and took care of business. It was a dominating defensive performance, which I knew our team was capable of. We wanted to improve offensively, and I think we accomplished that. We have a tough game against coming up against Queens, and we must build on the great win today.”
The Lady Indians are back in action Thursday, against Queens University at the Newberry Soccer Complex at 4 p.m.
