Men soccer plays a sloppy one, gets the draw on the road against West Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

BUCKHANNAN, W. Va. - The Newberry men's soccer team ended their first ever road trip in West Virginia with a 2-2 draw against West Virginia Wesleyan College. It was a tough game for both teams, as they were forced to sift through mud and patches of grass, but after 55 total fouls committed and two ten minute over time periods, both teams were content with the tie.  Newberry improves to 4-4-1 on the season.

The Indians went down 1-0 in the 35th minute when freshman Bobcat Marc Ferrell (Edinboro, Pa.) slotted home past Newberry's keeper, Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.). Shortly after, things turned a little ugly as Newberry head coach Sam Okpodu received a red card for dissent.  The Indian boss felt it was right to make an impression to the referees and to the Newberry team that the game was being called unfairly.  The half ended with West Virginia Wesleyan up on the Indians, 1-0.

After the halftime break, Kyle Rudder (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) notched the equalizer in the 56th minute when he volleyed a shot to the far post, courtesy of team captain Miles Childers (Casper, Wyo.). The Indians drew inspiration from the Rudder goal, as well from stand in coach, assistant Leto Alibaruho.  Alibaruho filled in nicely for the tossed Okpodu, motivating the Indians throughout the second half.

It didn't take long for the Indians to take the lead after the match became leveled, as Childers headed home a superb cross from co-captain Brandon Cockrell (Mauldin, S.C.) only one minute later. After more tussling in the mud and chilly air, the Bobcats evened the score at 2-2 in the 62nd minute when Jacob Schwertfeger (Wellsburg, W.Va.) crossed to Joe Burkland (Wheeling, W.Va.) on the back side, then headed the ball home. As regulation ended and overtime began, the two teams continued battling, but no chances were put away for the rest of the match.

With their first road trip to West Virginia behind them, the long bus ride home wasn't too bad after picking up a win on Friday against Davis & Elkins, 3-2 and then a draw against Wesleyan on Sunday.
