Box Score GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Newberry College's Jessica Lipsi recorded 16 kills to lead the Lady Indians to a 3-1 South Atlantic Conference volleyball win over host Tusculum College Friday night at Alpine Arena. Newberry completes the season sweep over the Pioneers (9-16, 0-12 SAC) winning the match by scores of 21-30, 30-21, 30-20, 32-30. The Lady Indians improve to 8-16 overall and 3-9 in league play while ending a six-match losing streak.
Jamie Foster-Mann (Painted Post, N.Y.) added 13 kills and a service ace, while Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) posted 12 kills and a team-high six blocks on the night for Newberry.
Tusculum's Stephanie Jaeger (Champlin, Minn.) accounted for 15 kills, while Alexis Rowles (Simpsonville, S.C.) established a new school single-match record with 46 digs. It was also a record night for junior Sarah King (Alpharetta, Ga.) who recorded her 475th dig of the year, setting a new TC single-season mark.
In the opening game, TC used a 9-0 run to move out to an 11-1 lead on Rowles serve. Sophomore Jessica Horton (Hendersonville, N.C.) accounted for five of her match-best eight blocks during that spurt. Newberry cut the deficit to 14-10 with a 9-4 run, capped off by a consecutive digs from Alicia Khoury (Toledo, Ohio). But TC answered with back-to-back kills from Jaeger and a service ace from Rowles to close out the frame 30-21.
Newberry roared out in the second game and led by as much as 20-8 before settling for a 30-21 win. The Lady Indians capitalized on a 13-3 run that including consecutive kills and a block from Coleman.
The score was close early in the third game as the score was tied six times, but Newberry went on a 5-0 run to move out to a 12-7 advantage, before winning the frame 30-20 as Foster-Mann tallied five of her 13 kills on the night.
The fourth game was a thriller as Newberry led through most of the first part of the frame, holding its biggest advantage at 14-10 following a kill from Foster-Mann. But Tusculum responded with a 5-1 spurt as Jaeger tied the frame at 15-15 on her kill. With the score tied at 19-19, Tusculum got two kills from Lindsey McGrady (Kingsport, Tenn.) and a service ace from Carrie Miller (Johnson City, Tenn.) to move ahead 23-20. The Lady Indians used a 7-1 run to move out to a 27-24 lead after blocks from Foster-Mann and Khoury. It was TC's turn to answer as it posted a 5-2 run and was serving game point at 29-28. But Lipsi closed out the match with two kills down the stretch as Newberry won 32-30.
Brittany Driggers (Lexington, S.C.) dished out 30 assists for the Pioneers in the losing effort.
Tusculum returns to action Saturday morning when it hosts SAC co-leader Presbyterian College for an 11 a.m. match at Alpine Arena. Newberry makes the short trip to Jefferson City tomorrow to face Carson-Newman College at Holt Field House.
