Catawba volleyball wins battle of Indians in four games

SALISBURY, N.C. - Catawba senior Crissi Harrison had 22 kills and three blocks to help her team defeat visiting Newberry in four games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym.  Catawba improves to 11-8 overall and 7-3 in SAC, winning by the scores of 33-31, 30-23, 18-30 and 30-27.  Newberry falls to 7-14 and 2-8.

Catawba held on to win a tight opening game.  Harrison had given Catawba an 18-11 lead with a kill, but Newberry came back with four straight points to close to 18- 15.  Another run by Catawba, highlighted by a pair of aces by Missy Bartholomew, pushed the lead back to 24-18 before Newberry used a 10-3 run, capped by an aced from Kristin Pulone (Diamond Bar, Calif.) gave Newberry a 28-27 lead.  Harrison killed off two Newberry potential winning points before a kill by Elizabeth Hewitt, and an ace by Crystal Bonner won the game for Catawba.

Harrison had 10 kills and a combo block in game two for Catawba.  Catawba pulled away from a 16-13 lead and Harrison killed off the final three Catawba points. Newberry dominated game three, racing to a 25-10 lead.  Jessica Lipsi (Columbia, S.C.) had six kills for Newberry in the game three win.

Game four saw nine ties and five lead changes.  Newberry got consecutive kills from Katie Stone (Greenville, S.C.) to lead 22-21 with Harrison following with two kills and a combo block to give Catawba a 25-22 edge.  Newberry pulled within 28-27, but an error and a kill by Hewitt ended the match.

For Newberry, Lipsi registered a team-leading 17 kills with 26 digs.  Stone had 14 kills, while Kelly Harting (Ohio City, OH) had 33 digs.  Setter Alicia Khoury (Toledo, OH) had 62 assists.
