Box Score NEWBERRY - Two teams fought through two overtimes and 110 minutes to watch it end with no time on the clock on a penalty kick by Presbyterian College's Tripp Godbee (Augusta, Ga.). Godbee helped PC avoid their second straight league tie and get a South Atlantic Conference road win over 2-1 Newberry College Tuesday afternoon at the Newberry College Soccer Complex.
The Blue Hose (7-2-1 / 2-1-1 SAC), the number-seven ranked team in the latest NSCAA/Adidas Southeast Regional Poll, evaded several one-on-one opportunities against the Newberry squad in the two overtime periods, and let a 1-0 lead slip away inside of two minutes in regulation. PC's defense stiffened when it had to, and keeper Kevin Czar (Lilburn, Ga.) was forced to make five saves in a brilliant game in goal for the visitors.
After playing to a scoreless tie at the half, the Blue Hose cracked the scoreboard first in the second half on a goal by Trent Weber (Lawrenceville, Ga.) in the 67th minute. He scored on a two-on-one touch by Aaron Pretulak (Moore, S.C.).
Newberry (6-4 / 1-2 SAC) had several opportunities slip away with wide open shots but finally scored when forward Brandon Cockrell (Mauldin, S.C.) got in the left corner near the goal line and chipped a touch back to forward Troy Pinckney (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) for a goal with 1:10 remaining in regulation.
Neither team could score in the first overtime, with the Indians getting the only shot, which was saved in Czar.
The second OT had more flash, with each team getting a shot in the period, but the Indians were called for a handball as the clock expired in their own goal box, giving Godbeee the chance to win it with a PC victory. He put the ball low inside the right post past a diving Tim Seibert (Harrisburg, N.C.) to get the road win. Seibert had made seven saves in the game prior to Godbee's game-winner.
Newberry and PC have played three consecutive one-goal games, two of those going overtime, including a 116-plus minute thriller two years ago in the SAC Tournament.
Presbyterian travels to Florence, S.C. on Friday to take on the region's number-eight ranked Francis Marion University Patriots for a 4 p.m. match. Newberry heads to Pfeiffer University for a 4 p.m. match on Thursday.
