Box Score NEWBERRY - The UNC Pembroke Braves remained undefeated on the season by taking down Newberry College 3-1 in men's college soccer action Wednesday afternoon at the Newberry College Soccer Complex. The Braves, the number-four team in the latest NSCAA/Adidas Southeast Region Poll, remain undefeated at 6-0 this season, while the Indians, who earned the program's first-ever ranking at ninth this week, drop to 5-2.
The Braves got on the board in the opening minutes with terrific possession and excellent touches early. Pembroke scored at the 6:12 mark on a header by Christoph Schiessl (Regensburg, GERMANY) from a left sideline service by Jose Sanchez (GUATEMALA). The game stayed 1-0 until the 32nd minute on a loose ball goal by Christian Kucklick (Wilhelmshaven, GERMANY). The score remained 2-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Indians got on the board in the 58th minute on a tight one-on-one score by junior forward Brandon Cockrell (Mauldin, S.C.) on a pass from sophomore Shawn Liesch (Kissimmee, Fla.). The goal was Cockrell's second of the season.
UNCP added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute on an unassisted goal from Pembroke's Ahmet Yenison (Tauberbischofsheim, GERMANY).
The Indians had only the one shot on goal and the Braves outshot Newberry overall by a 17-6 margin.
Pembroke keeper Alex Hall (Knightdale, N.C.) did not have to make a save, but allowed only his second goal of the season in this contest. Indians keeper Tim Seibert (Harrisburg, N.C.) made six saves and gave up three goals in consecutive matches. Seibert has given up just ten goals through seven matches for a 1.44 goals against average.
UNCP opens up Peach Belt Conference play on Tuesday when the Braves go to Francis Marion in a 4 p.m. kickoff. Newberry heads back into South Atlantic Conference plan with a 2 p.m. road game at Mars Hill Sunday afternoon.
