Newberry returns to winning ways at Coker

Box Score

HARTSVILLE - Coker fell short in an offensive showcase Monday night, falling to Newberry 6-3 in men's collegiate soccer.  The Cobras answered the Indians goal for goal through 68 minutes before the offensive outburst dried up.  CC drops to 1-5-1 on the season, while Newberry improves to 5-1.

The Indians got on the board first in the 11th minute on a goal from Brandon Cockrell.  Coker answered back in the 27th minute with a beautiful goal on a corner kick.  Senior Dan Hargis' kick was flicked across the goal mouth by classmate Kevin Verikas, where junior Gibson Baafour waited to hammer it home on a half volley.

Coker went up 2-1 10 minutes later on another set piece.  This time, Hargis flicked a long throw in from Verikas to Baafour again, and the junior blistered another hard shot on the half volley.  NC answered towards the end of the half with a goal from Shawn Liesch on a penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2.

The Indians went back ahead in the 55th minute following a foul 30 yards out.  The ensuing free kick found Chad Domis alone eight yards out, and Domis easily made it 3-2.  The Cobras had one more answer four minutes later on another well executed corner kick.

Freshman Sean Maupin's kick found senior Eugene Payne at the back post, and Payne headed the cross back to the middle of the box, where classmate Christian Otero blasted a hard shot in the net.

Newberry took the lead for good in the 69th minute on another penalty kick, which Chad Domis converted for a 4-3 lead.  The Coker defense began to tire late and goals in the 76th and 80th minutes by Taylor Correll created the final margin.

With the offensive rejuvenated after a pair of shut out defeats, the Cobras will battle St. Andrews this Wednesday, September 17, at 7:00 PM. Newberry hosts UNC Pembroke for a 4 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
