Box Score CLINTON - Newberry College's freshman midfielder Robbie Getsinger (Charleston, S.C.) scored the game-winning goal 113th minute of the match as the #7-seeded Indians upset the #2-seeded Blue Hose of Presbyterian College 2-1 in double overtime in first round action of the 2003 Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Tuesday night at Martin Stadium. It was Getsinger's first career collegiate goal and it guarantees the Indians their first-ever winning season in nine seasons of college soccer.
The win propels the Indians into the semifinal round this Saturday, November 8 at 1:30 pm at home against the #3 seeded Indians of Catawba College who earlier in the night defeated #6 seed Lenoir-Rhyne College 4-0. Newberry improves to 9-7-3 on the season while Presbyterian finishes the year with a 11-5-1 mark. The win is the first for the Indians in seven tries in the SAC Tournament and the program's first two goals in postseason play.
PC took an early 1-0 lead as senior defender Chris Middendorf (Athens, Ga.) scored off an assist from redshirt sophomore Jeff Haigler (Columbia, S.C.) in the 33rd minute of play. The Indians controlled play for the rest of the half including outshooting the Blue Hose 6-1, but trailed 1-0 entering intermission.
In the second half, Newberry evened the match at 1-1 in the 70th minute as freshman forward Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) scored off a rebounded shot from teammate junior midfielder Brandon Cockrell (Greenville, S.C.). PC dominated the shots down the stretch, outshooting Newberry 7-3 in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The first overtime PC got the only scoring opportunity as senior forward Derek Knapp (Orange, Tex.) lobbed a shot over Newberry's freshman keeper Tim Siebert (Harrisburg, N.C.), but the shot missed to the right. In the second overtime, Newberry took advantage of a corner kick by Cockrell which Getsinger put home for the game-winner.
In goal for the Indians, Siebert allowed one goal and stopped four shots while his counterpart, junior keeper Kevin Czar (Lilburn, Ga.) of the Blue Hose allowed two goals and stopped five shots.
