Newberry records fourth shutout of the season at North Greenville

Box Score

GREER - Newberry College extended its school record by recording its fourth shutout of the season in a 3-0 win against North Greenville College at Greer City Park Wednesday afternoon in men's soccer action.

The Indians (8-7-3) are also one win away from the program's first winning season in school history and will have to get it against arch-rival Presbyterian next week in tournament play.

Following a scoreless first half, Newberry forward Chad Domis (Irmo, S.C.) scored twice in a 1:46 stretch six and a half minutes in to put the Indians up for good. Domis leads the team with nine goals this season. His first goal was assisted on a header by defender Miles Childers (Casper, Wyo.) from a corner kick assist from midfielder Brandon Cockrell (Mauldin, S.C.). Domis scored again off his own miss from Crusaders keeper Daniel Eskew. Cockrell added a penalty kick goal when Domis was taken down in the goal box at the 62:31 mark. Cockrell leads Newberry with five assists this season.

Newberry goalkeeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) recorded the first shutout of his collegiate career with five saves. Eskew faced 24 shots in goal for North Greenville, including 14 on goal, and made some spectacular saves, but could not hold off the barrage in his second season playing keeper at the college level.

The Indians are now finished with the 2003 regular season and will travel to Presbyterian College next Tuesday for the first round of the Food Lion / South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Two seasons ago, the Indians and Blue Hose played to a 1-0 PC victory in two overtimes in round one of tournament play. During the regular season earlier this year, the Blue Hose won a 1-0 decision with no time left in the second overtime on a penalty kick. Last year, the Indians took a 2-1 victory in Clinton to keep the Blue Hose from winning a share of the conference crown, making this match the one to watch in round one. The winner will advance to the semi-finals, hosted by Newberry, the following weekend.
