Newberry ties season high with six goals en route to home rout of Erskine

Box Score

NEWBERRY -  Five different Newberry College players scored goals, including a pair from junior midfielder Brandon Cockrell (Mauldin, S.C.) en route to the Indians' 6-2 rout of Erskine College at the Newberry College Soccer Complex Tuesday afternoon in NCAA men's soccer action. The six goals matches the season-high output from a Sept. 15 match against Coker and the four goal margin is the Indians' largest this season.

Newberry (7-6-1) scored first on an unassisted goal by forward Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) just past the 17 minute mark to get Newberry on the board. Forward Taylor Correll (Columbia, S.C.) put home Newberry's second goal in the 22nd minute, on assists from Cockrell and forward Troy Pinckney (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) to give the Indians a two-goal margin. The score remained 2-0 at the half.

The Indians scored again just one minute, 32 seconds into the second period on Cockrell's first goal of the match. He took a cross from Correll to send it low past a diving Ben Stoner (Simpsonville, S.C.) in goal for Erskine. Stoner made four saves in the match for the Flying Fleet.

Four minutes later, Erskine (2-8-1) thwarted the shutout with a goal in the 51st minute from midfielder David Peters (Arima, TRINIDAD). Peters scored both Erskine goals in the match.

Newberry's Pinckney, Cockrell and forward Chad Domis (Irmo, S.C.) added goals late for the Indians. Domis leads the team with seven goals, while Pinckney's three assists in the match gives him a team-leading four on the season.

Newberry starting keeper Tim Seibert (Harrisburg, N.C.) allowed one goal and made one save, while reserve Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) made three saves and allowed the other Erskine goal in his 32-plus minutes in goal.

Both Erskine goals were assisted by junior midfielder Josh Veres (Pelzer, S.C.)

Erskine plays the back half of a Carolinas Virginia Athletic Conference doubleheader at Barton College Saturday, beginning with the women at 1 p.m., while the Indians host Lenoir-Rhyne for two matches as women's play begins at 2 p.m.
