Sean Johnson retired as fulltime athletics director at Newberry College on June 1, 2026 after over four years in that role and 42 years in college athletics.
He currently services as Emeritus Athletic Director focusing on fundraising for the department.
Johnson joined the Newberry College Athletics Department as Director of Athletics on April, 1, 2022.
Johnson came to Newberry after serving as athletic director for the University of Jamestown (North Dakota) since 2015.
Prior to Jamestown, Johnson served as athletic director at Division II Angelo State University (2012-15), and as associate athletic director at Division I University of North Dakota (2008-12), and New Mexico State University (2004-06).
He spent 25 years as a Sports Information Director at several schools before moving into athletic administration.
Johnson is the past president of Jamestown Rotary, and he has served on the boards of the Salvation Army of Jamestown, Jamestown Chamber of Commerce, and Jamestown Ambassadors.
He currently serves on the board of the Living Hope Foundation and the Newberry Rotary Club.
He and his wife, Marcia, have a son, Ian. Johnson is a 1983 graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia.
