Will Betancourt enters his role as Head Assistant Coach of the Newberry College wrestling program with an elite competitive résumé and a reputation as the nation’s premier wrestling technician, recruiter, and assistant coach.
A native of Manheim, Pennsylvania, Betancourt competed at the highest levels of collegiate and international wrestling. He began his collegiate career at Ohio State, where he was a starter at 133 pounds during the 2021–22 season as a superstar for the Buckeyes. He then transferred to Penn State, competing at 125 pounds during the 2022–23 season. While at Penn State, Betancourt was part of both a Big Ten Championship team and an NCAA Championship team.
Betancourt continued his collegiate career at Rider University, competing at 133 pounds from 2023 through 2026. Throughout his collegiate career, he was consistently ranked among the nation’s Top 20 wrestlers. He capped his Rider career as a 2026 Mid-American Conference finalist and NCAA Division I qualifier. During the season, Betancourt earned a notable victory over Purdue’s Blake Boarman, who had defeated NCAA Champion Lucas Byrd the previous week.
His accomplishments extend well beyond collegiate wrestling. A four-time World Team member, Betancourt has represented Puerto Rico on the international stage. He is also a two-time Pan American Games finalist and finished fifth at the World Championships in Albania, further establishing himself as one of the most accomplished wrestlers and technicians in the country.
Betancourt brings that experience directly into his coaching. Widely regarded as the best recruiter and assistant coach in the country, he will play a critical role in recruiting elite student-athletes to Newberry and developing wrestlers through his technical expertise, competitive experience, and understanding of what it takes to succeed at the highest levels of the sport.
His ability to connect with recruits, identify talent, and develop wrestlers makes him an invaluable leader and a cornerstone of Newberry’s continued pursuit of national prominence. As Associate Head Coach, Betancourt will help shape the program’s technical development, recruiting efforts, competitive preparation, and team culture.
Betancourt earned his degree in Sports Management and is a native of Manheim, Pennsylvania.
