Deral (pronounced Duh-RELL) enters his fourth season as the head Wrestling coach at Newberry College.
Last season, the Wolves recorded a 10-6 overall record while going 8-1 en route to finishing second in Conference Carolinas. Devan Moore became the programs 46th NCAA All-American and continued a 17-year streak that Newberry has recorded at least one All-American. The Wolves also boasted five NCAA Qualifiers and five NWCA Scholar All-Americans. Among those five NWCA Scholar All-Americans was John Parker. He also took home the Conference Carolinas Elite 23 Award for having the highest GPA among all competitors in the conference.Â
In 2022-23, Coach Brown led Newberry to a 12-5 dual match record including 8-2 in Conference Carolinas competition. The Wolves earned dual match victories against #14 Fort Hays State and #24 Ashland, finished 3
rd in Super Region II, and had six wrestlers compete at the NCAA Division II national championships with Devan Moore extending the programs streak of consecutive years with an All-American to 16 as he placed eighth at 149 pounds.
In his first season as head coach, the Wolves went 9-5 in duals, including placing fourth at NWCA National Duals with upset wins over #3 McKendree and #14 Upper Iowa, the programs best finish at the event since 2014. The Wolves would send five wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament and would win their second straight NCAA Super Region II Title, the program's tenth overall.
Prior to returning to Newberry, Brown was the head coach at King University in Tennessee. In his two years at King, Brown coached five Tornado to NCAA Qualifications, including one All-American in Christian Small. He also had six wrestlers named to the All-SACC Team and had seven placers at the NCAA Super Region II Tournament.
Prior to being named the head coach at King, Brown would have his first stint with the Newberry Wrestling Program as an assistant coach. As a coach, he helped led the Wolves to a South Atlantic Conference Carolinas championship with a 6-0 league record. The Wolves went 12-3 in duals and sent seven wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament with three earning All-America honors to give the Wolves to a ninth place finish.
Brown's first collegiate coaching experience came when he served as an assistant coach at SUNY-Cortland in Cortland, N.Y. from 2016-18. In that time he helped the Red Dragons finish seventh in the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships. Over those three years, Brown has coached 16 national qualifiers, six All-America honorees, two national finalists, and one national champion. He has also had 12 student-athletes that have garnered academic All-America honors.
Following his graduation from Newberry, Brown served as the head coach at Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston, S.C. form 2014-16. While there he was named led the Patriots to the 2016 4A State Championship and was named South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) Coach of the Year for the 2015-16. In that state title run, the Patriots had six state placers and one individual state champion.
In his career at Newberry, Brown was a two-time national qualifier, earning All-American honors in 2013 when he finished fourth. He is tied for the most wins all-time with at Newberry with 143, a title he shares with Associate Head Coach, Bryant Blanton, and BJ Young. He is also the program's all-time leader with major decisions. While at Newberry he also attended the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Leadership Academy.
