Mashario Morton

Morton was promoted to Head Coach of the men's and women's track and field programs after serving for two seasons as an assistant with the programs.

Since arriving to Newberry in 2019, Morton turned the Newberry throwing program around and the Wolves have become a presence in the South Atlantic Conference.

In the 2021-22 indoor track season, the Wolves had their first individual SAC Champion as Jase Hunter won the weight throw as the men's team had their second top-ten finish as a team in a row. Four Wolves, including two throwers, were named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team after the indoor season, the first for the Wolves in the indoor season. Freshman standout, Irma Watson-Perez also earned SAC Field Athlete of the Week honors during the indoor season.

In the spring 2022 outdoor season, both the men's and women's teams had their highest placement at the SAC Championships in program history with a pair of seventh place finishes. The women's side was led by three event titles, the first three outdoor SAC titles in program history, two of which came from throwers. Freshman, Andrea Pascual-Rivera won the hammer throw and freshman, Tiwani Myles won the discus. On the men's side, Jase Hunter placed second in the hammer throw. All three of those athletes came within centimeters of also hitting NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks which would've made them the first individuals to do so in program history. The throwers also provided several top-eight scoring preformances to help the Wolves to that historical finish. Tyla Stolberg also earned SAC Field Athlete of the week honors earlier in the season.

The season prior, there were eight school records broken and numerous personal bests set in the throwing events. Conference scorer, Kayshon Mitchell, highlighted the season with a 5th place conference finish in the Hammer. In the shortened 2019-20 season, Morton coached Iris Duke to a 6th place SAC finish in the weight throw, also breaking the school record.

Morton previously was at Dixie High School, where she served as the Head Girls' track and field coach. During her stint at the high school level, Coach Morton produced 11 state champions, the girls’ and boys’ were back-to-back region champions, and the boys’ program were the state runners-ups for the first time in school history. Dixie High School was also awarded the Carlisle Cup for having the best athletic program in 1A, another first in school history.

Morton was a four-year thrower at Division I Winthrop University. She came into Winthrop as a decorated high school athlete, having won six South Carolina state championships in the Discus and and Shotput. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Performance and two minors in Coaching and Women and Gender studies respectively in 2016. Morton is a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Morton and her partner Jaelyn have a son, Tristan.
