Anthony Washington returned to Newberry College as an assistant coach for the 2022-23 season.
He coaches the sprints and hurdles.
At the 2025 SAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Shamar Brown took third and Landon Tucker fourth in the 400-meter hurdles while the men's 4 x 100-meter relay team finished second and the 4 x 400-meter team finished third.
At the 2024 SAC Indoor Championships Brown finished fifth in the 400-meter dash.
The veteran coach returned to Newberry after serving as an assistant sprint coach at Columbia International.
He coached six conference champions and 12 NCCAA national qualifiers, including a national champion in the 400-meter hurdles.
This is Washington’s second stint at Newberry, previously spending time as a volunteer assistant from 2017-2019.
During his 38 years of experience in training and coaching, he has served as USATF Chairman for Men’s and Women’s Track and Field, coached 22 All-Americans and 3 Olympians, as well as coached at the 2016 World Track and Field Championships in Portland, Oregon for Team Bahamas.
Washington, is a co-author of a series of autobiographies, “The Heart of a Black Man”.
