Daniel Read enters his third season as an assistant coach on the Newberry cross country and track and field teams. Read serves as the distance coach for the track and field team.
In 2021-22, Read helped lead the women's cross country team to their best SAC Championships finish since 2011 and their best NCAA Southeast Regional finish ever. The women's squad was also named an USTFCCCA All-Academic Team as well. In the fall as well as the spring, the Wolves distance squad saw several program best times ran, including Alaya Lindquist breaking the school record in the 1500m.

Read was a four-year distance runner for the Captains. Under the direction of Head Coach Tyler Wingard, Read was a four-time First-Team All-CAC, six-time Second-Team All-CAC, three-time all-region and a four-time Academic All-American. Read also won 12 CAC titles, two NCAA DIII Regional titles, a Regional runner-up, and 31st, 11th, and third place team finishes at the NCAA DIII National Cross Country Championship.
Read graduated from Christopher Newport in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Cellular, Physical and Molecular Biology and lives in Newberry.Â
