NEWBERRY, S.C. – Behind hat tricks from Wibien Dahmen and birthday girl Faye Siekmann, the Newberry College field hockey team rolled to a 7-0 victory over Belmont Abbey in its home opener Tuesday evening, improving to 2-0 on the young season.
The Wolves wasted little time taking control, striking twice in the opening quarter. Dahmen opened the scoring before Payton Keeler added another to send Newberry into the second period with a 2-0 advantage.
Siekmann then took over in the second quarter, scoring twice in a span of just 19 seconds to double the Wolves' lead. The birthday brace sent Newberry into halftime firmly in control at 4-0. Newberry's offensive pressure continued after the break. Dahmen collected her second goal of the night in the third quarter before Siekmann found the cage again, completing the hat trick and extending the advantage to 6-0.
Dahmen put the finishing touches on the dominant performance in the fourth, scoring the period's lone goal to complete a hat trick of her own and give the Wolves their final 7-0 margin.
While the offense poured in seven goals, the Newberry defense was equally impressive. The Wolves limited Belmont Abbey to just four shots for the entire contest – exactly one in each quarter. Goalkeeper Kensley Harris turned away all four attempts to preserve the shutout.
Newberry now turns its attention to a highly anticipated rematch of last season's NCAA Division II National Championship game. The Wolves travel north to face Shippensburg on Saturday, Sept. 12, looking to avenge last season's heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to the Raiders in the national title game.
