Wolves Roll Past Barton, 9-0, to Improve to 4-1

NEWBERRY, S.C. — The Newberry College field hockey team continued its strong start to the season Saturday morning, cruising to a 9-0 victory over Barton at home to improve to 4-1 on the year.

The matchup marked the second meeting of the season between the Wolves and Bulldogs after Newberry opened its campaign with a 10-0 road victory over Barton.

Newberry wasted little time getting on the board. Wibien Dahmen opened the scoring just 2:24 into the contest, finishing off an assist from Parker Keeler to give the Wolves an early 1-0 advantage. Just two minutes later, Dahmen struck again, this time off an assist from Parker's sister, Payton Keeler, to quickly double the lead.

The Wolves continued to apply pressure in the second quarter, adding three more goals from three different players. Olivia Smith pushed the advantage to 3-0 with an unassisted goal before Philine Kuipers followed with an unassisted tally of her own. Just before halftime, Mia Pancoast delivered a well-placed pass to Charlee Thompson, who found the back of the net to send Newberry into the break with a commanding 5-0 lead.

Newberry was just as dominant defensively, limiting Barton to only one shot throughout the entire first half.

The scoring continued in the third quarter as even more Wolves joined the action. Katie Sharron recorded her first goal of the match before Faye Siekmann followed with one of her own, extending Newberry's advantage to 7-0 heading into the final period. Finet Heemskerk and Georgia Langley joined the scoring party in the fourth quarter, each finding the back of the net to bring the final margin to 9-0.

While nine goals highlighted the offensive performance, the Wolves were equally impressive on the other end of the field. Newberry held Barton to just one shot in each half and finished the match with a dominant 32-2 advantage in total shots.

With the victory, the Wolves improve to 4-1 on the season and now turn their attention to a busy week at home. Newberry will play three consecutive home matches, beginning with a conference matchup against Converse on Tuesday, September 22 at 7 p.m.
