ANDERSON, SC — The Newberry softball team dropped both games of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Anderson on Wednesday afternoon, falling 11–4 in game one and 7–4 in game two. The Wolves showed flashes offensively across both contests but were unable to overcome big innings from the Trojans in each game.
Game 1: Anderson 11, Newberry 4
Anderson used a dominant 10-run second inning to pull away early and secure an 11–4 victory in the opener.
The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the first before breaking the game open with 10 runs in the second. Newberry answered with a run in the top of the second when Ella Stone walked, and scored on Christine Butler's RBI bunt single.
The Wolves added two more runs in the fourth. Stone singled and Graceann Thompkins walked before both came home on a two-out play when Brooke Hodges reached on an Anderson error, with both runs scoring unearned. Payton Little added Newberry's final run with a solo home run to left in the fifth.
Game 2: Anderson 7, Newberry 4
Newberry erased an early deficit and battled back multiple times, but Anderson held on for a 7-4 win in game two.
The Trojans struck first in the opening inning , but the Wolves answered in the fourth. Samantha Clark singled to start the frame and Payton Little followed with a walk before Haidyn Campbell delivered an RBI single up the middle. Later in the inning, Bethany Pigg brought home another run with a sacrifice bunt to tie the game at 2-2.
Anderson responded in the bottom half of the fourth and added two more runs over the next two innings.
Newberry continued to push late. In the sixth, Katie Henri singled, Bethany Pigg followed with a base hit, and after a wild pitch and walk by Emma Bailey, Graceann Thompkins drove in a run with a two-out single through the right side. The Wolves added one more in the seventh when Brooke Hodges walked, Clark singled, and Little brought Hodges home with an RBI single to center.
The Wolves will return home on Saturday to face Catawba in a SAC doubleheader starting at 1pm.
