Game Recap: Softball |

A Game Two Shutout For Newberry Softball to Earn the Midweek Split

AIKEN, SC – Newberry softball split the doubleheader at USC Aiken on Feb. 18, dropping the opener 7–4 before bouncing back with a run-rule shutout, 8–0, in Game 2. The Wolves showed patience and timely hitting in both games (drawing seven walks in Game 1 and four more in Game 2), then paired a fast start with a dominant effort in the circle to close the day on a high note.

Game 1 – USC Aiken 7, Newberry 4

USC Aiken used a pair of home runs and a big early stretch to build a lead, and Newberry's comeback bid came up just short in the 7–4 decision. After falling behind 5–0 through four, the Wolves got on the board with Katie Henri's RBI single in the fifth and pulled within two on Brooke Crosby's two-RBI single later in the inning. Newberry added a run in the seventh when Haidyn Campbell reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error allowed a run to score, but USC Aiken held on. Payton Little led Newberry with a 2-for-4 day and two runs scored, while Katie Kapusta went 6.0 innings in the circle.

Game 2 – Newberry 8, USC Aiken 0 (6 inn.)

Newberry responded in a big way in the nightcap, scoring three times in the first and cruising to an 8–0 win in six innings behind Natalie Wescott, who earned the victory as the Wolves held USC Aiken to three hits. Brooke Hodges drove in three (RBI double in the first, two-RBI single in the fourth), Samantha Clark added two RBIs (including an RBI single in the first and another in the fourth), and Bethany Pigg capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the fifth.
