No. 10 Newberry Rolls in Season Opener Behind Tozana’s Hat Trick

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The 10th-ranked Newberry Wolves opened their 2025 field hockey season in dominant fashion, blanking Frostburg State 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field. The day was highlighted by a breakout performance from freshman Amber Tozana, who scored a hat trick and added an assist in her collegiate debut.

The Wolves wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Less than two minutes in, Emma Westbrook buried the opening goal of the season off a setup from Tozana, giving Newberry an early 1-0 lead. In the second quarter, Tozana tallied her first career goal in the 22nd minute, finishing a sequence assisted by Katie Sharron and Zoe Barker. That strike pushed the Wolves ahead 2-0 at halftime.

After a defensive third quarter, Newberry broke the game open in the final frame. Tozana struck twice in under a minute — first off a pass from Agustina Montserrat at 47:44, then again unassisted at 48:20 to complete her hat trick. Wibien Dahmen put the finishing touch on the victory in the 53rd minute, slotting home a goal assisted by Westbrook.

Newberry's defensive unit was just as impressive, limiting Frostburg to six total shots with only four on target. Ayanda Mangenah earned the win in goal, recording two saves in 45 minutes before Kensley Harris closed out the shutout. Sofia Urzilloalso contributed a defensive save in the opening quarter.

The Wolves dominated statistically, outshooting Frostburg 18-6 while holding an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners. Tozana's three-goal, one-assist effort led the charge, while Westbrook contributed across the board with a goal, an assist, and a defensive save.

With the win, Newberry improves to 1-0 while Frostburg falls to 0-1. The 10th-ranked Wolves now turn their attention to their first road contest of the season, traveling to face Belmont Abbey on Tuesday, September 9.
