Wolves Battle to Scoreless Draw in Season Opener

Box Score

NEWBERRY, SC – The Newberry women's soccer team opened the 2025 season with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Converse on Thursday evening at the Smith Road Complex.

Junior goalkeeper Madison Gutierrez was the difference maker for the Wolves, standing tall with four saves, including three in the second half, to preserve the shutout. The Newberry back line, anchored by Emily Castaneda, Sydney Gusewelle, and Avalina Espinoza, held strong under steady pressure as Converse outshot the Wolves 11-8.

On the attacking end, Newberry created chances of their own with Molly Quartly putting two shots on goal, while Ella McDevitt and Sandra Brennan also tested the Converse keeper. Despite generating four corner kicks and controlling 54% of the possession, the Wolves were unable to find the finishing touch.

The result gives Newberry a 0-0-1 record to start the 2025 season. The Wolves will look to build on the defensive momentum when they return to action next week.
