Rodriguez’s Late Winner Lifts Wolves to First SAC Victory in Home Opener

NEWBERRY, SC – The Newberry College men's soccer team secured its first South Atlantic Conference win of the season in dramatic fashion, defeating Tusculum 2-1 in the home opener Saturday night at the Smith Road Complex.

The Wolves struck first in the 14th minute when Ben Curtis scored a penalty kick to notch his first goal of the year. Tusculum equalized in the 21st minute, and the score remained static deep into the second half. In the 82nd minute, however, Kaden Rodriguez delivered the decisive strike, finishing off an assist from Brayden Martinez for his first collegiate goal.

Goalkeeper Charlie Clark recorded four saves in the win, while the Newberry defense stood tall against 10 Tusculum shots. The Wolves finished with 11 shots of their own, three on target, and earned three corners.

With the victory, Newberry improves to 3-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in SAC play, remaining unbeaten through its first four matches of the season. The Wolves will be back home in their next match vs. Shaw University at 2:30pm on Wednesday.
