In the heart of Newberry, South Carolina, a story of resilience and gratitude unfolds, tracing the path of Beth Williamson, a former tennis standout whose journey led her from New Zealand to the courts of Newberry College.
Â
Her story is not just about athletic achievements but about the power of community, the strength to overcome setbacks, and the profound impact of collegiate sports on one's life.
Â
A REDIRECTION OF FATE
Â
Growing up as a top junior tennis player in New Zealand, Williamson's talent led her to the United States on a scholarship to Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. There, she experienced the thrill of winning the Big South title in 2013. However, life took an unexpected turn when she lost her scholarship, leaving her at a crossroads.
Â
"It was a really challenging time," she recalls. "I wasn't sure what would come next."
Â
In the midst of uncertainty, a chance encounter with her art history teacher at Winthrop became a pivotal moment in her life.
Â
Recognizing Williamson's potential and the need for a fresh start, her teacher offered to drive her to Newberry to meet Coach Gardiner and explore the campus. That small act of kindness turned out to be a life-changing redirection for Williamson.
Â
"From the moment I arrived at Newberry, it felt right. I was given a second chance, and I grabbed it with both hands," she says.
Â
A SECOND HOME
Â
At Newberry College, Williamson found more than just a tennis court – she found a second home. The support of Coach Gardiner, her teammates, and the entire college community played a crucial role in helping her rebuild, not just as an athlete, but as a person.
Â
"What started as a setback became one of the best redirections of my life, and I'll always be grateful for it," she reflects.
Â
Williamson's time at Newberry College was filled with cherished memories and meaningful experiences.
Â
From the simple joy of spending time in the cafeteria with friends and teammates to the camaraderie on long bus rides to away games, she found a sense of belonging that made Newberry feel like home.
Â
"My time at Newberry taught me so much, especially about teamwork, independence, and resilience," she shares.
Â
"Coach Gardiner was a big part of that journey. He really understood the importance of balance and made sure we weren't just developing as athletes, but as people. That well-rounded experience helped me build confidence, manage pressure, and stay grounded – all qualities that have carried through into my professional life as a project manager in conservation."
Â
THE BEAUTY OF EVERY DAY
Â
Beyond the victories and accolades, it was the people at Newberry College who left a lasting impact on Williamson's life.
Â
Coach Gardiner, in particular, was a source of inspiration and guidance.
Â
"Rain, cold, wind – no matter the weather, Coach would show up at the courts and say, 'Beautiful day, beautiful day.' We used to laugh about it at the time, but now I really see the truth in it. Every day we wake up is, in its own way, a beautiful day – that mindset has stuck with me ever since," she reflects.
Â
Her doubles partners, Tara Lamers and Amanda Carrillo, also played a significant role in her journey. Their support and friendship made the challenges more manageable and the victories even sweeter.
Â
"Their support meant everything," she says. "That sense of community made Newberry feel like home."
Â
A PLACE IN THE HALL OF FAME
Â
Today, Williamson carries the lessons she learned at Newberry College into her professional life and continues to maintain a connection to the game of tennis. While her path didn't lead to a higher level of tennis competition, she still competes at the top level in her city, challenging top players and relishing the sport that has been a part of her identity.
Â
"Tennis will always be part of who I am, and I credit Newberry with helping me maintain that lasting connection," she affirms.
Â
As Williamson reflects on her journey, she offers advice to current Newberry College student-athletes, encouraging them to appreciate the time they have and make the most of the opportunities in front of them.
Â
"Setbacks are part of it. Learn from them, move on, and keep showing up. You don't have to get everything perfect. Just commit to the process, stay open to growth, and take the time to enjoy the people around you," she advises.
Â
In recognition of her remarkable journey and contributions to Newberry College, Williamson will be inducted into the Newberry College Athletics Hall of Fame.
Â
For Williamson, this honor is not just a celebration of athletic achievements, but a reflection of resilience, perseverance, and the incredible support she received along the way.
Â
"Being selected to the Newberry College Athletics Hall of Fame is an incredible honor – and one I never expected," she shares. "Although I am back home now, literally halfway around the world, Newberry is and always will be a second home to me. I'm so proud to be a Wolf!"
