Wolves Fall Short in Road Doubleheader at Wingate

WINGATE, NC – The Wolved jumped out to first-inning leads in both games, but couldn't hold on, falling 10-2 and 5-2 in a SAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Softball Complex.

Game One: Newberry 2, Wingate 10 (5 Innings)

Newberry jumped out to a fast start in game one, plating two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Wolves couldn't hold off a relentless Wingate offense that surged ahead for a 10-2 win in five innings.

Samantha Clark provided the big hit early for the Wolves, roping a two-RBI triple down the right field line that brought home Christine Butler and Haidyn Campbell. Butler and Campbell each had a multi-hit game, combining for four of Newberry's five hits in the game.

Wingate responded quickly, scoring in every inning except the second. The Bulldogs used a three-run third to take the lead, then tacked on four more in the fourth and added two insurance runs in the fifth to put the run rule into effect.

Game Two: Newberry 2, Wingate 5

The Wolves again struck first, this time on the first batter of the game, as Maddy Staples launched a leadoff solo home run to left center to give Newberry an early 1-0 advantage. However, the Bulldogs responded quickly, scoring three in the bottom half of the inningand added two more in the fourth to stretch their lead to 5-1.

Newberry threatened several times throughout the game, stranding nine runners on base, including a bases-loaded situation in the fourth. The Wolves sent across one more run in the seventh on an RBI single from Campbell.

Staples finished with a home run, two runs scored, and a walk. Campbell reached base three times and drove in a run, and Bethany Pigg added a double. Natalie Wescott went the distance in the circle, allowing five earned runs on seven hits across six innings of work.

With the loss, Newberry looks to bounce back in their home doubleheader on Saturday vs. Lenoir-Rhyne at 1pm and 3pm at the Smith Road Complex.
