JEFFERSON CITY, TN – The Wolves battled in a tough doubleheader against Carson-Newman but ultimately fell short in both games. The Wolves took an early lead in game one, but a late surge from the Eagles resulted in an 11-3 loss. Game two saw Newberry's offense come alive with 13 hits, but a late rally from Carson-Newman handed the Wolves a 13-9 defeat despite their strong efforts at the plate.
Game 1: Carson-Newman 11, Newberry 3
Newberry wasted no time getting on the board, striking in the second inning when Ella Stone roped an RBI double, bringing home Leah Evans, who had reached on a walk. The Wolves continued their momentum in the fourth, as Bethany Pigg delivered an RBI double, giving the Wolves a lead of 3-2.
Despite Newberry's early control, Carson-Newman found its rhythm late, exploding for nine runs over the final two innings. Lindsey Foster kept the Eagles in check early, working through multiple jams and recording a strikeout, but the Carson-Newman offense took control on key opportunities down the stretch. The Wolves were unable to slow the Eagles' late push, leading to the final score of 11-3.
Game 2: Carson-Newman 13, Newberry 9
Newberry jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning with a Haidyn Campbell two RBI single and a run walked in. After Carson-Newman evened the score, the Wolves looked for a surge in the fifth behind nice hitting from Maddy Staples, Katie Hamilton, and Katie Henri taking the deficit down to 9-7, with two innings to go.
With the Wolves down 12-7 going into the top of the sixth, they looked to make a comeback, getting within three runs of the Eagles after a Pigg fielder's choice RBI and a Stone RBI single to center. Unfortunately the Eagles were able to hold on to their lead after tacking on another run, ending the game, 13-9.
The Wolves look to regroup as they continue conference play on Saturday, March 8th, when they face off against Mars Hill University in a home doubleheader at 1pm and 3pm.
