Newberry Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader Against Columbus State

NEWBERRY, SC – The Newberry softball team opened the 2025 season with a hard-fought doubleheader split against Columbus State. Despite a late rally, the Wolves dropped Game 1, 6-4, before bouncing back in Game 2 with a dominant 9-1 victory in six innings. Strong offensive performances from Maddy Staples and Bethany Pigg, along with stellar pitching in Game 2, helped Newberry start the season on a high note.

 

Game 1: Columbus State 6, Newberry 4

 

Leah Evans went 3-for-4 with a double, scoring one run and providing a spark at the top of the lineup.

 

Pigg and Staples both blasted a home run in the fifth inning, bringing Newberry within striking distance.

 

Lex Glemaker pitched 6.2 innings, striking out six, and throwing 133 pitches, but Columbus State capitalized early on.

 

Despite outhitting Columbus State 11-9, Newberry fell 6-4 to the Cougars in game one.

 

Game 2: Newberry 9, Columbus State 1 (6 Innings)

 

Newberry opened the scoring in the second inning with another blast from Staples and never looked back, tacking on runs in four of the next five frames.

 

Evans went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, helping set up key rallies.

 

Haidyn Campbell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, helping set up key rallies.

 

The Wolves plated two runs in the fourth, highlighted by a clutch 2-RBI single from Mady Brown.

 

A four-run explosion in the fifth inning put Newberry in control, with multiple hits from Marissa Valenzuela, Samantha Clark, and Ella Stone.

 

Clark finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, providing a key boost in the middle of the lineup.
 

Pitcher Lindsey Foster tossed a complete-game, allowing just one run while striking out four.

 

Newberry worked four walks and two hit-by-pitches, taking advantage of free baserunners.

 

The Wolves closed the game in the sixth inning via run rule, securing their first win of the season.

 

With the split, Newberry moves to 1-1 on the season and will look to build momentum in the final game of the 3-game series tomorrow at 12pm.
