Field Hockey captures its first SAC tournament title!!

Wolves Aim For National Championship Today At 12:30

The #1 seeded and unbeaten Newberry College Wolves field hockey team (20-0) is hoping 21 is their lucky number when they take on #3 seed Shippensburg (19-3) in the NCAA Division 2 field hockey championship game Sunday at 12:30 p.m. from Steph Pettit StadiumĀ  on the campus of Bloomsburg University (Pa.).

The Wolves earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by defeating Lander 3-0 in the SAC Championships game and then advanced to the title game with a 4-1 win at home over Bentley (Mass.) in the first round and a 3-0 victory Friday over #5 seed West Chester (Pa.) in the semifinals.

Newberry is 3-0 this season in the state of Pennsylvania with two victories over West Chester and one over Mansfield back in September.

Shippensburg (19-3) earned the automatic bid from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with a 2-1 win over regular season champion Kutztown then advanced to the title game with a 3-0 victory over defending national champion Saint Anselm and another victory over Kutztown 3-1 in the national semifinals.

This is the Wolves first trip to the NCAA Tournament and just the second time a team from the SAC has qualified.

Shippensburg is in the NCAA Tournament for the 18th time and has won six total national championships.

The Wolves feature first team All-South Atlantic Conference picks Wibien Dahmen, Emma Westbrook, Parker Keeler and Payton Keeler.Ā  Payton Keeler was also named the MVP of the SAC Postseason Tournament.

Newberry also features second team All-SAC selections Amber Tozana, Ayanda Mangenah, Lieke Varenkamp and Emma Hulsmeyer.

Parker Keeler leads the nation in assists (1.00) and points per game (2.90) and is third in goals per game (0.95).Ā  Westbrook is second in goals per game (1.15) and third in points per game (2.45) whlle Dahmen is seventh in goals per game (0.80).Ā  Mangenah leads the nation in fewest goals allowed per game (0.62) and is third in saver percentage (.831).

The Wolves lead the nation in goals per game (5.11) and scoring margin (+4.47).

Westbrook is the Wolves career record holder for most goals (60) and points (131) and her 23 goals this season is also a school record.

Parker Keeler is right behind her second in career points (108) is the career record holder in assists (30) and is tied for second in goals (39).

Parker's twin sister Payton was the MVP of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament and Thursday was the name the winner of the Elite Scholar Athlete for the top grade point average for participants at the field hockey championships.

Their older sister Brady (2016-19) also played for the Wolves and enjoyed an outstanding career with the Wolves.Ā  She earned first team all-conference honors as a senior and finished with 30 goals, 18 assists and 78 points in her career while starting 62 of 73 games.

Head coach Hannah Dave won her 100th career game when the Wolves won the SAC Postseason Tournament championship game.Ā  She has turned around a program that went 0-15 in its first year of existence in 2013 into a consistent winner.Ā  The Wolves have posted seven consecutive winning seasons under Dave, in her ninth season as head coach, posting a combined record of 88-20.Ā  Overall she is 102-56.

Newberry College has never won a team national championship but does boast individual men's wrestling national champions in Keeno Griffin (2009), Cy Wainwright (2009), Bryant Blanton (2010) and Isiah Royal (2021).
