Wolves Shutout West Chester 3-0 To Advance To National Championship Game

Box Score The top seeded Newberry College Wolves field hockey team continues to make history as they defeated #5 seed West Chester (Pa.) 3-0 in the NCAA Division 2 national semifinals in Bloomsburg, Pa. to advance to Sunday's national championship game at 12:30 p.m.

The Wolves grabbed the advantage less than a minute into the game when midfielder Finet Heemskerk streaked down the far sideline, passed it to Wibien Dahmen who shuffled the ball across the crease to Emma Westbrook who was standing on the doorstep and tapped it in for her 23rd goal of the season and her 60th of her Newberry career.

Less than four minutes later, the Wolves struck again as Payton Keeler, the MVP of the SAC Postseason Tournament and the winner of the NCAA Division 2 Elite Scholar-Athlete Award the previous night, scored a highlight reel goal.  She picked up a loose ball near midfield, dribbled it on her backhand through the legs of one Golden Ram defender and beat the West Chester goalkeeper to the near side for her 12th goal of the year to give Newberry a 2-0 lead.

The Wolves put an exclamation mark on a dominant first half when with just over a minute to play Parker Keeler used her superior stick handling to force a penalty corner.
Westbook passed the ball to Heemskerk who bounced a shot to the near side of the net where defender Emma Hulsmeyer was waiting and tapped it in for her sixth goal of the year with just 1:02 left in the half to make it 3-0.

From there the Wolves threatened several times in the second half to tack on more insurance goals, but the Newberry defense shown brightly as goalkeeper Ayanda Mangenah posted a pair of second half saves, three for the game, to record her 17th victory and fourth shutout of the season.

The Wolves combination of Mangenah, midfielders Heemskerk, Payton Keeler, Emma Swatski, Lieke Varenkamp, Agustina Montserrat and defenders Hulsmeyer, and Sofia Urzillo put a stranglehold of the Golden Ram offense, holding them to four shots on goal.

Newberry outshot West Chester 22-13 and registered 13 shots on goal.

Dahmen led the Wolves with five shots and three on goal, Parker Keeler with four shots and three on goal and Heemskerk and Amber Tozana each with three shots and one on goal.

The Wolves are now 20-0 overall and have won all three of their games played in Pennsylvania this year with two victories over West Chester and one against Mansfield.

Newberry will face Shippensburg Sunday at Steph Pettit Stadium  on the campus of Bloomsburg University (Pa.).
