Westbrook Leads No. 3 Newberry to 10th Straight Win With Record-Breaking Performance

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College field hockey team continued their perfect season with a 3–2 win over Lander University on Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field. The Wolves improved to 10–0 overall and 7–0 in South Atlantic Conference play, highlighted by a record-setting performance from Emma Westbrook, who became the program's career points leader with her three-goal outing.

Newberry opened the scoring early in the first quarter when Westbrook capitalized off a setup from Amber Tozana at the 4:07 mark, giving the Wolves the momentum and an early 1–0 advantage. The Wolves dominated possession through the opening half, outshooting Lander 10–3, but the Bearcats' defense and goalkeeper kept the score close heading into halftime.

Westbrook struck again in the third quarter, converting on a penalty corner sequence to extend Newberry's lead to 2–0 at 34:49. The goal came amid an intense offensive stretch that saw Newberry rack up multiple penalty corners and shots on target, keeping Lander's defense under heavy pressure. Lander cut into the lead in the fourth quarter as Olivia Bond scored off a corner from Julia Matthijssen to make it 2–1. However, Westbrook wasted no time restoring the two-goal cushion, completing her hat trick at 51:46 thanks to a well-placed assist from Agustina Montserrat. The Bearcats added one more late goal by Victoria Hulst at 54:05, but Newberry's defense held firm over the final minutes to secure the 3–2 victory.

In addition to Westbrook's standout day, Tozana and Montserrat each tallied assists, while the Wolves' backline limited Lander to just three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Ayanda Mangenah earned the win with one save in the contest. Newberry outshot Lander 18–7 overall and 11–3 in shots on goal.

With her three goals today, Emma Westbrook not only recorded her second hat trick of the season but also became the all-time leader in career points in Newberry College field hockey history.
The Wolves will return to action on Tuesday, October 14, traveling to face Barton College at 1 p.m. in Wilson, N.C.
