The Newberry Wolves wrestling team faced a demanding day at the Tracy Borah Duals, beginning the event with a thrilling 23-22 victory over Adams State University before battling tough losses against Western Colorado University, Colorado Mesa University, and CSU-Pueblo.
Round 1: Vs Adams State University
The Wolves opened the day with a dramatic 23-22 win over Adams State. The highlight came in the heavyweight bout as Kale Schrader delivered a critical fall in just 1:57, securing the team's narrow victory in their comeback. Other standout performances included John Parker's decisive fall at 197 lbs in 2:59 and Braden Tatum's major decision at 141 lbs (14-3). Dayton Fields and Andrew Reed also added crucial wins, with Fields dominating at 174 lbs with a 10-1 major decision.
Round 2: Vs Western Colorado University
In the second round, Newberry faced a strong Western Colorado team, falling 31-15. Despite the loss, the Wolves saw exceptional efforts from Caiden Pelc, who secured a fall at 133 lbs in 6:38, and Schrader, who continued his dominance in the heavyweight division with a 56-second fall. Fields added another victory at 174 lbs, showcasing his consistency throughout the day.
Round 3: Vs Colorado Mesa University
Colorado Mesa showcased its depth in a 35-9 victory over Newberry in the third round. The Wolves found success in the middle weights, with Nick Humphrys earning a fall at 165 lbs in 2:48 and Fields with a hard fought 10-9 decision at 174 lbs Schrader battled valiantly but suffered a rare setback, falling by major decision.
Round 4: Vs CSU-Pueblo
The Wolves closed the duals with a challenging 46-6 loss to CSU-Pueblo. Parker provided a bright spot with a gritty fall at 197 lbs in 5:45. However that wasn't enough, as the ThunderWolves' pulled away with the win against our Wolves.
The Wolves will compete next on January 16th in Eleazer Arena against Limestone University at 7:00 PM.
