Greensboro, NC— Newberry College Rugby took to the field at Guilford College for the Bleed Crimson 7s tournament, showcasing an outstanding performance by winning two of their three matches. The team's skill and determination were on full display, marking a successful outing in the competitive event.
Match One
In a challenging matchup against Emory & Henry's Wasp, the Wolves displayed commendable effort on the field. The Wasp managed to score four tries and one conversion, taking control of the game. However, the Wolves fought back with a try from
Maria Valerrabano-Merino, expertly converted by
Lexi Zloba, finalizing the score 7-22.
Match Two
The Wolves faced off against the Spartans of the University of North Carolina Greensboro in an electrifying match that showcased their strength. Both the offense and defense proved unstoppable, leading to back-to-back tries and an impressive display of teamwork.
Lexi Zloba led the charge with two tries, while
Jessie Deane made a standout contribution with three tries of her own.
Ella Litwin-Scanzani,
C'niyah McCrary, and
Lucy Miller each added a try, further solidifying the Wolves' commanding presence on the field. Zloba and
Emily Pulley also contributed with successful conversions, rounding out a remarkable team performance.
Defensively, the Wolves were impenetrable, effectively shutting out the Spartans and preventing any scoring opportunities. The match concluded with a resounding score of 48-0, marking the highest-scoring game for the Wolves.
Match Three
In the final match of the day, the Wolves faced off against the Quakers of Guilford College in a tightly contested game where both teams were evenly matched. The Quakers quickly took the initiative, scoring two back-to-back tries along with a conversion to establish an early lead.
Undeterred, the Wolves responded with two impressive tries from Deane, leveling the score and reigniting their momentum. However, the Quakers managed to sneak in another try against the Wolves' defense, reclaiming the advantage.
Refusing to back down, the Wolves rallied and regained control of the match. They scored two crucial conversions—one from Pulley and another from
Anna Dunham—along with a try from Zloba. The match concluded with a thrilling score of 22-17 in favor of the Wolves.
