CENTRAL, S.C. – The Newberry College men's and women's track and field teams produced a combined four winners and four second-place efforts at Friday's Gotta Run Invite hosted by Southern Wesleyan.
On the women's side,
Leonie Samuels won the shot put event with a throw of 12.95 meters (42 feet, 6 inches). Samuels' throw was a narrow two inches ahead of second place in a tight competition.
Andrea Pascual Rivera picked up her first win since last year's Georgia Southern Classic in the hammer throw, heaving it 51.09 meters (167 feet, 7 inches). Pascual Rivera dominated the field by a whopping 35-plus feet.
For the men, last week's South Atlantic Conference WePlayed Sports Men's Field Athlete of the Week,
Kegan Crowell, picked up right where he left off with another win in discus Friday. Crowell's 52.26-meter throw (171 feet, 5 inches) is a new personal record, has him first on the SAC Outdoor Performance list in the category, and is seventh in Division II. Crowell beat his closest competitor by over 33 feet.
The Wolves swept the top two spots in the 400m hurdles thanks to
Shamar Brown's win and
Landon Tucker's runner-up result. Brown (55.74 seconds) set a new personal best and grabbed the first solo win of his collegiate career. Tucker also hit a new PR in 56.44 seconds.
Rahyme Christian (14.69 seconds) placed second in the 110m hurdles, another career-best time for a Newberry athlete. And
Tyler Shumate, on the heels of his first collegiate win two weeks ago, was second in the 800m run with a new best time of 1:57.31.
