The Wolves Split SAC Double Header with the Lions on the Road

MARS HILL, S.C.- The Wolves split with the Lions of Mars Hill today in a South Atlantic Conference double header. Mars Hill took game one 14-13 and Newberry took game two 9-7.

Game 1

The Wolves battled but the Lions took game one of the double header 14-13.
The Lions started game one off with a two-run home run and a run scored on a failed pickoff to take the lead in the bottom of the first inning 3-0.
Senior centerfielder Vanessa Wilson put the Wolves on the board in the top of the third with a two-run home run to shorten the Lions lead to 3-2.
The Lions would add two more runs in the fourth with a triple and a double.
Bethany Pigg would answer with a grand slam for the Wolves to take the lead in the fifth 6-5.
Mars Hill tagged a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score 6-6.
The Wolves continued to battle totaling six runs in the six to take the lead once again 12-6. Hailey Hill hit a three-run bomb to left field, Leah Evans singled and advanced on the throw and Kristin Griffin scored, and Tori Rose doubled to left center for Pigg to cross the plate.
The Lions hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to shorten the Wolves' lead to 13-10.
Leah Evans walked with bases loaded, and Cassidy Phelps scored to add one run in the seventh inning.
The Lions would have a solo home run and a three-run home run to walk off with the win in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score 14-13.

Game 1 Leaders
  • Bethany Pigg went one for three at the plate with a grand slam and four RBIs.
  • Hailey Hill went one for four at the plate with a home run and three RBIs.
  • Leah Evans went one for two at the plate with two RBIs.
  • Vanessa Wilson went one for three at the plate with a home run and two RBIs.
  • Tori Rose went one for three at the plate with a double and two RBIs.
  • Lindsey Foster totaled seven strikeouts in her 4.1 innings of work.
Game 2

The Wolves took game two of the double header 9-7 to split with the Lions.
Jayla Jackson earned the win for game two of the afternoon allowing seven runs on 12 hits with seven strikeouts in her 6.1 innings of work.
The Lions put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first to make the score 2-0.
Melanie Carr reached on an error by the Lions leftfielder and Kristin Griffin scored in the second to make the score 2-1.
Bethany Pigg singled through the right side for Vanessa Wilson to cross the plate to tie the score 2-2 in the top of the third.
The Lions would add one run in the bottom of the third to regain the lead 3-2.
The Wolves came out hot in the top of the fifth tallying seven runs to take the lead 9-3. Vanessa Wilson would ground out to the catcher and Hailey Hill would score. Leah Evans hit a double and Kristin Griffin scored. Tori Rose doubled and Leah Evans and Bethany Pigg both scored. Sierra Brogdon doubled for Tori Rose to come across the plate. Hailey Hill and Vanessa Wilson both had RBI singles.
The Lions would attempt to come back adding four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Wolves would take game two 9-7.  

Game 2 Leaders
  • Kristin Griffin went three for four at the plate with a double.
  • Hailey Hill went three for five at the plate with a double and an RBI.
  • Sierra Brogdon went two for four at the plate with a double and an RBI.
  • Vanessa Wilson went one for three at the plate with two RBIs.
  • Tori Rose went one for four at the plate with a double and two RBIs.
  • Jayla Jackson earned the win and totaled seven strikeouts in her 6.1 innings.
Up Next
The Wolves will turn around and be back on the road as they continue conference play and face the Trojans of Anderson this Saturday for a double header set to begin at noon.
