NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Wolves swept the Bobcats of Lees-McRae in a double header for their season opener at the Smith Rd. Complex.
Game 1
The Wolves offense got off to a slow start through the first four innings of the contest. The bats came alive for the Wolves in the fifth inning scratching four runs to take the lead over the Bobcats. After a quick top of the 6th defensive inning the Wolves were up to bat again.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Wolves came out firing with a leadoff double by Vanessa Wilson. With the first two Wolves reaching base, they got both runners to advance on a sacrifice bunt by Bethany Pigg. The first two runs of the inning would come across the plate on wild pitches.
The inning didn't stop there.
Leah Evans would start another rally by drawing a walk. The next at-bat Tori Rose peppered the ball into the left center gap for a double. With two outs Sierra Brogdon stepped up to the plate and hit a single into right field scoring two runs for the Wolves to extend their lead 8-3. With only needing three more runs to force a mercy rule, the Wolves would do just that. Keeping the inning alive with two outs, Yahaira Williams would single up the middle to score Hailey Hill and Maddy Staples to force the mercy rule for the first game of the double header.
Game 1 Leaders
- Brogdon led the Wolves with three hits and three RBI's.
- Hailey Hill went 2 for 4 with two RBI's.
- Williams went 1 for 1 with two RBI's.
- Lindsey Foster only gave up two earned runs through five innings of work with four strikeouts.
Game 2
The Wolves kept momentum going from game one, as they came out hot in the second game with a three-run first inning. Brogdon doubled to left center to bring Mady Brown home and Vanessa Wilson singled through left side for an RBI and Brogdon scored.
The runs continued to flow for the Wolves through the 4th inning. Tori Rose hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Melanie Carr in to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 2nd inning. Leah Evans singled to the pitcher and was able to advance on a Bobcat error for two RBI's, Carr scored on an error and Emily Perry scored.
Rose added two more runs for the Wolves to make the score 7-2 in the fourth inning with a single to right field to bring Evans and Brown home.
Brogdon homered over the left field fence to extend their lead to 9-2.
Williams would come up to bat and triple to left center to score Wilson to cap off their seven-run 4th inning.
In the top half of the fifth Alexandrea Sullivan would come in to relieve Jayla Jackson. After a single down the line by the leadoff batter for the Bobcats, Sullivan would turn around and strike the next three batters out to force yet another mercy rule by the Wolves.
Game 2 Leaders
- Brogdon led the pack with three RBI's.
- Hill and Brogdon both led with two hits.
- Evans had two RBI's.
