Mount Olive, N--The Newberry College Women's Wrestling team kicks off their 2024 season at Mount Olive University, featuring an impressive lineup of five newcomers
Emely Mejia-Martinez finished 4th in the tournament, earning 13.0 team points for Newberry. After a bye in the first round, she won by fall against Gabriella Bumgardner but lost to Jenna Anderson by tech fall in the quarterfinals. She rebounded in the consolation rounds with wins over Catherine Head and Jillian Ellis but lost to Shammilka Miranda in the 3rd place match.
Summer McKeen, competing at 131 pounds, received a bye but was pinned by Jo-Ellen Hutto in the second round. She fought hard in consolation but ultimately lost by tech fall to LilyAnn Blair.
Madison Edens, at 160 pounds, earned 3.5 team points. After a bye, she won by tech fall against Ida Pellei but was defeated by fall in the quarterfinals and again by fall in consolation against Olivia Hogan.
Summerlin Armstrong faced Nile Jernigan in the first round and was pinned, then lost to Dymanique Jones in consolation.
Avianna Velarde had a strong performance, earning 6.0 team points. She won her first match by fall and followed up with another fall in the quarterfinals, but lost by tech fall to India Page and was pinned by Kamryn Ellis in consolation.
The Wolves are set to compete again on November 6 at Lincoln Memorial University
