Newberry Field Hockey Rises 8-1 with Win Over Lander

Greenwood, SC—On October 12th, the Newberry Field Hockey team faced off against Lander University and emerged victorious with a score of 2-1.  This win advanced their record to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the South Atlantic Conference
 
As the first period unfolded, the Bearcats scored their only goal at 11:34, giving them an early lead. Newberry committed 7 fouls, while Lander was even more aggressive, recording 11 fouls during the same stretch. Despite the penalties, both teams were still finding their rhythm on the turf.  As the second period kicked off, Newberry quickly struck back with a goal at 17:32, netted by Parker Keeler unassisted. Both teams continued to battle fiercely, leading to a series of fouls: Lander committed 6, while Newberry recorded 9.
 
As the second half of the game progressed. Both teams continued to push hard for an advantage, but neither team could find the elusive goal.  Lander's defense was particularly impressive, with their goalie making 4 critical saves that denied Newberry any scoring opportunities during the period, ending the third period 1-1.  In the final moments of the game, Newberry took the lead at 52:23 with an unassisted goal by Wibien Dahmen. This pivotal score shifted the momentum firmly in Newberry's favor, making the final tally 2-1. The game ended with Newberry claiming a hard-fought victory, demonstrating their determination and tenacity throughout the match.  In the end, Lander edged out Newberry in saves, finishing with 4 compared to Newberry's 3. However, Newberry held a significant advantage in penalty corners, earning thirteen to Lander's 3.  
 
The Wolves will be back in action at Setzler Field on October 14th at 6 PM, where they will face off against the Bulldogs of Wingate.
