Wolves Shut Out Pacers 4-0 in Season-Opening Rout

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College men's soccer team got off to a roaring start in 2023 with an all-around dominant performance in a 4-0 win over the visiting Pacers of USC Aiken tonight.

It all started with a goal in the game's 13th minute, an impressive shot by Seraphin Guetan from about 25 yards out on the right side for a 1-0 lead.

Guetan then became the facilitator some 17 minutes later, assisting on third team preseason all-conference member Ethan Orozco's laser in the game's 30th minute to give the Wolves a healthy 2-0 lead.

The first half scoring wasn't done there, though, as Joel Martins headed in a pass from Henok Awoke to give Newberry a commanding 3-0 advantage with less than a minute remaining in the first half.

After a scoreless opening 30 minutes of the second half, Orozco made it a two-goal night with an incredible shot from outside the penalty area on the right side as he twirled one to the upper left corner of the net. The goal made it 4-0 and put the game out of sight.

Graduate transfer Jacob Cotton played all 90 minutes in net and made six noteworthy saves in a lockdown performance that ensured victory for the Wolves.

In all, five yellow cards were given out on the night – three for the Pacers and two for Newberry.

The Scarlet and Gray will look to ride a wave of momentum as they hit the road this Saturday (Sept. 9) in an early-season South Atlantic Conference matchup with Catawba. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
