NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Field Hockey team opens their 2023 season as they will make a road trip up north to the state of New York this weekend.
The Wolves will first stop in Garden City, N.Y., for their Friday (Sept. 1) contest with the Panthers of Adelphi University. Friday's match will be at 7:00 p.m. Then the Wolves will finish the holiday weekend as they will travel to the big apple to take on the Setters of Pace University. That match will start at Noon on Sunday (Sept. 3)
Scouting the Wolves
- Head Coach Hannah Dave enters her ninth season coaching at Newberry seventh as a head coach for the Field Hockey squad Dave is currently the all-time winningest coach in Newberry Field Hockey history with a 53 wins as a head coach. The Wolves enter the 2023 season selected third in the SAC preseason coaches' poll.
- The Wolves return 10 of the 11 starters from the 2022 season where they went 11-8 with a 7-5 SAC mark.
- Lieke Varenkamp, Stembile Chikoore, and Tamsin Bangert all recieved first-team preseason all-SAC honors. Marissa Plumer, Payton Findlay and Hailey Moore recieved preseason second team all-SAC honors
Scouting the Opposition
- Adelphi enters the 2023 season ranked third in the preseason Northeast-10 poll and eighth in the preseason National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) preseason poll. The Panthers are conming off of a 2022 season where they finished with a 13-9 record and won the NE-10 postseason tournament championship. The Panthers finished their season in the NCAA division II quarterfinals as they lost to West Chester University 10-1.
- Pace enters the 2023 season voted third in a tie with Adelphi in the NE-10 poll and tenth in the NFHCA preseason poll. Led by head coach Kayte Biordi, who is entering her 12th season at the helm of the Setters program, has led the team to two consecutive NE10 Conference Championship appearances.
