NEWBERRY, S.C. - Women's soccer drops hard fought match 1-0 against a stout Lander University.
Closing out their non-conference play, the wolves showed heart as the came up short against a strong bearcat roster.
After allowing a very unlucky, mishandled goal in the 20th minute of the match, the Wolves shut down the aggressive bearcats. Although minimal opportunities arose for the wolves to shoot, they let off multiple very promising shots, either just missing the goal or barely being saved by the keep. Senior
Taylor Hamblin was relentless on the attack in the first half, always having her presence felt and letting off two shots. The first half would also see shots from
Taya Matt,
Haylee Patino and
Sydney Gusewelle.
The second half did not prove to be much different than the first, until the final 77th minute of the match, where
Skyla Starziski had an opportunity to score from a feed by
Molly Quartly. Unfortunately Starziski could not connect with the ball properly and slightly missed the goal over top.
Defensively the wolves played their heart out, seeing incredible performances by
Arden Kirkpatrick,
Becca Lipp and
Emily Castaneda. Making sure everyone heard her voice Lipp took command of the defense, predicting where the ball would go and where to line up at.
Rizza Songco and
Allyna Gonzalez also played a major role in the stoppage, having multiple close quarter skirmishes with some of the bearcats, and forcing turnovers.
The wolves hit the road on Friday October 27 at 5 PM to play at Mars Hill where they look to keep their playoff hopes alive.
