NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry Wolves women's soccer team dropped their match against the Francis Marion Patriots 0-1 on Wednesday.
The back-and-forth match saw the teams both take seven shots in the first half with none reaching the back of the net. Both teams saw several opportunities to score in the opening half, but the defenses prevailed.
About 30 minutes into the first half, Newberry forward
Jaidyn Jacobs (Bloomington, Calif.) put a shot past the posts, but the Wolves were called for offsides and the would-be goal did not count.
Starting the second half even at 0-0, the teams again went back and forth until the 58th minute,
Jaidyn Jacobs again put a shot past the Patriots' keeper, and again the Wolves were called offsides and the would-be goal was waived off.
The teams were again deadlocked until the 81st minute when Patriot forward Le'Leandra Jarvis scored the lone goal of the night off of an assist by forward Valentina Restrepo.
The goal put the Wolves into a full-on attack to even the game in the last nine minutes of the match. They held several opportunities to score, including back-to-back corner kicks in the final minute of the match.
The Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they host Lees-McRae University at 7:00 p.m. as part of an action-packed weekend for Newberry College athletics.
