NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Wolves opened the Fall 2022 season at home at Smith Road Complex, but they couldn't secure the victory in a tightly-contested match against Flagler.
The first half started with an uneventful first 18 minutes until an
Ethan Orozco free-kick broke the deadlock to make it 1-0. Play would continue until drama ensued after the 24th minute when a red card from
Harry McDonnell reduced the Wolves to ten men.
After four more minutes of play, momentum would shift towards Flagler as they would go on to equal the score at one all after the 28th minute. 13 minutes of possession dominated by the Saints would go on to result in a second goal after the 41st minute, taking the match right into halftime.
Down a goal and a man in the second half, the Wolves looked to change their fortunes by coming out of the gates strong. The Saints would continue to dominate the possession game, but the Wolves were patient, surprising Flagler with multiple counterattacks as the half went on. A late surge would ultimately not be enough as the Wolves would be defeated 2-1.
Speaking on the performance of the team, Coach
Justin Cook could not have been more proud of his team. "Super proud of the effort; I couldn't be more proud. They dug in, they battled, they fought…and that's going to go a long way towards our success this year."
The Wolves will look to bounce back on Sunday, August 28 for their second home match against the University of Mount Olive at Smith Road Complex.
