Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College field hockey (11-7, 7-5 South Atlantic Conference) team defeated the Coker Cobras in the South Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Championship quarterfinals by a final score of 3-0, advancing to Friday's semifinal round against No. 1 Mount Olive.
The Wolves wasted no time getting to work offensively and just over one minute into the contest sophomore midfielder
Stembile Chikoore (Harare, Zimbabwe) took the first shot of the match. The shot went wide and the Wolves began the hunt for another scoring opportunity. Despite outshooting the Cobras 7-1 in the first quarter, Newberry was unable to put a shot past the Cobras' keeper and the teams entered the second quarter drawn at 0-0.
This would not last long as just over three minutes into the second quarter, sophomore forward
Tamsin Bangert (Johannesburg, Z.A.) opened the scoring off of an assist from freshman midfielder
Lieke Varenkamp (Middelburg, Netherlands). The Wolves outshot the Cobras again through the remaining 12 minutes of the second quarter, including two shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the cage again in the first half and took the one-goal lead into halftime.
After a shot from Bangert was saved by the Cobra's keeper, Chikoore hit the deflection and put the ball past the Cobra's keeper to double the Wolves' lead in the 37th minute. Just over two minutes later, freshman forward
Emma Westbrook (Dover, Del.) scored the Wolves third goal of the contest with an assist from Chikoore. After taking the three-goal lead, the Wolves defense took over to maintain the lead. Following Westbrook's goal, there was only one shot by either team for the remaining five minutes of the period and the teams entered the final 15 minutes with Newberry's three goal lead intact.
The Wolves defense stepped up in the final quarter and did not allow the Cobras to take a shot in the fourth quarter and coasted to the 3-0 quarterfinals victory. Freshman goalkeeper
Peyton Hamilton (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded her fourth shutout of the season (third solo shutout).
The Wolves return to the field Friday, Nov. 18 to take on the SAC Piedmont Division Champion Mount Olive Trojans. The game, being played at Converse University in Spartanburg, S.C., is scheduled to begin at 2 P.M.
