NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Kasey Widmeyer threw a complete-game shutout Monday afternoon as Newberry topped Lenoir-Rhyne in the second game of a SAC doubleheader 3-0. The Bears took game one 10-3. Newberry finishes the season with a record of 20-15, with an 11-13 mark in conference play.
Game One
After Lenoir-Rhyne stranded a pair of runners in the top of the first, Newberry drew first blood in the bottom of the frame, using a leadoff single from
Paige Meyer, a fielder's choice that saw Meyer retired, but allowed
McKenzie Barneycastle to not only reach base, but she swiped second, setting up
Haley Simonds to hit a single into right-center field, bringing Barneycastle home and giving Newberry a 1-0 lead. Lenoir-Rhyne tied things up in the top of the second before striking for three runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.Â
Newberry responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of Simonds, who hit a home run to straightaway center field to bring the Wolves to within two. The Bears then scored six runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 10-2 lead. Newberry scratched across a run in the bottom, as
Tedi Nunn reached on a single, advanced to second on a ground ball before scoring when Meyer ripped a single into right-center field. Unfortunately the Bears defense was able to escape the inning, and shut down the Newberry offense in the seventh to take the first game.
Game Two
After finishing the first game, Widmeyer stepped into the circle to start the second game and turned in a gem, throwing all seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits with eight strikeouts to earn her sixth win of the season. She got plenty of run support, starting in the second inning when
Hannah Towery hit a solo home run over the left field fence.
Abigail Valentine added to the lead in the third, lacing a triple into the right field corner, allowing Meyer to come from second base base and score, giving Newberry a 2-0 lead.
Newberry added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, using three hits to get the job done. It started when
Tedi Nunn hit a leadoff single into center field, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Sydney Patterson. After a single to center field courtesy of Meyer, Valentine picked up her second RBI of the game, hitting a single into center field that allowed Nunn to score, and putting a pair of runners on. After Simonds drew a walk, the Wolves were unable to convert any further, stranding three runners.
That was plenty for Widmeyer, who threw the final two innings, issuing a couple of walks and allowing a hit, but not allowing a single run to come across the plate. Valentine finished the game 2-3, with a pair of RBI. Meyer also had a pair of hits, going 2-2 with a walk and a run scored. Towery and Nunn were the other Wolves to record a hit.Â
