NEWBERRY, S.C. --
Courtney Velazquez scored her first two goals of the season Thursday night as the Newberry women's soccer team topped the Anderson Trojans 3-1.
Ashlee Rotert recorded the assist on all three goals for the Wolves, who end the regular season with a 4-4 overall record and a 2-4 record in conference matches.
Vanessa Baird got the scoring started for the Wolves, taking a pass from Rotert in the 11th minute and finding the back of the net for her first goal of the season, giving Newberry a 1-0 lead. Anderson had four corner kicks over the next two minutes, but were unable to get a single shot off. Their first shot came in the 18th minute and was saved by Newberry goalkeeper
Delaney Hood.Â
Anderson got a flurry of shots, starting in the 30th minute, but Hood stood tall in net, making five saves over the next eight minutes to preserve the lead. The Trojans did score with under a minute left in the half to send the game into halftime tied at 1.
Coming out of the break it was Newberry who swarmed the net, as Rotert recorded a shot in the 52nd minute that went wide of the net, though she tallied her second assist of the game just 40 seconds later when she fed Velazquez, who slipped the ball past the Anderson goalkeeper, once again putting Newberry in the lead. Velazquez only needed nine minutes to score a second goal, as once again it was Rotert feeding her for the goal, giving Newberry a 3-1 lead.
There wasn't much of a comeback attempt from the Trojans, as they managed just two shots in the second half, with one shot on goal. The Wolves outperformed Anderson, recording 10 shots on the game, five of which were on goal. Newberry's goalkeepers combined to make four saves, with Hood making three saves in the first half.
