GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Newberry goalkeeper
Jacob Williams made a season-high 11 saves Friday night, but it wasn't enough as the Wolves were unable to break through the Limestone defense, falling 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference action.
There wasn't much action early on, as it took until the seventh minute for either team to record a shot, which came courtesy of Newberry's
Wynston Johnson, though it went out of bounds. The Saints would record their first shot in the 17th minute, but Williams made a beautiful save, keeping things scoreless. The Saints got another shot a minute later that sailed over the net. Limestone recorded another shot on goal not long after, which was again saved by Williams. The Saints finally broke through in the 20th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Wolves were able to get a shot on goal in the 44th minute when
Tre Bonaparte got a look, but it was saved by the Limestone goalie. It resulted in a corner kick for Newberry, but they were unable to convert and the game went into halftime 1-0 in favor of the Saints. Williams ended the half with three saves, while the Wolves had three shots as a team, two of which were on goal courtesy of Bonaparte.
It didn't take long in the second half for the Wolves to get a scoring chance, as
Noah Vezzu took a shot in the 50th minute that was saved by the Limestone goalie, preserving their 1-0 lead. The Saints managed to get a pair of shots on goal in the 55th minute, but Williams repelled both of them, keeping the Wolves in the game. Limestone would again pepper WIlliams in the 63rd minute, getting off three shots in a span of two minutes, but once again Williams stood tall, making three saves.
Vezzu recorded another shot on goal in the 71st minute, but was unable to beat the Limestone goalkeeper, the Wolves had a chance off the rebound but were called for offsides. The Wolves had one final attack in the 88th minute, but what looked to be a prime scoring chance was nullified by a Newberry foul. The Saints got off one final shot in the closing seconds that Williams again saved, but his efforts weren't enough for the Wolves.
