NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Newberry Women's Soccer team picked up their third win of the season here Thursday, outlasting the Limestone Saints 2-1 at the Smith Road Complex. All three goals that were scored came in the first half, with Newberry's coming within one minute of each other.
It was the Wolves who got the scoring started, as
Ashlee Rotert recorded her first goal of the season 15 minutes into the game, giving the Wolves an early lead. They didn't have to wait long for the second goal, as
Jaidyn Jacobs took a pass from
Jacqueline Aldrete and slipped it past the Limestone keeper to pick up her fifth goal of the season and give the Wolves a 2-0 lead. The Saints responded just one minute later, as Limestone's Selina Boveleth scored to cut the Newberry lead in half.
The score remained tied heading into the intermission, with the Saints outshooting the Wolves 5-4 in the half, though Newberry had more corner kicks. In the second half, neither team was able to score another goal, as Newberry's
Jayleen Gant made three clutch saves, including one with seven minutes to go that would prove to be the final gasp of air for Limestone, as they were only able to get one more shot off in the closing seconds, but it sailed harmlessly over the net.
Jacobs was the offensive leader for the Wolves, recording a team-high three shots, with one shot on goal and her first-half goal. Aldrete had a pair of shots and an assist for Newberry, while Rotert had one shot, which was her early goal.
Ariana Paez played 35 minutes as a sub, recording a pair of shots. As a team, Newberry was outshot for the first time all season, though both Newberry keepers made three saves, and the Wolves had five corner kicks compared to three for Limestone.
