Survive and Advance: Two Late Goals Lift Newberry to Conference Semifinals

Crowder and De Meyer Lift Wolves to Second Consecutive Semifinal Berth

Newberry, S.C. - The last two meetings between Newberry and Mount Olive were defensive slugfests with one goal being scored in each matchup. However, on Tuesday evening, it was a different story as six total goals were scored and two fourth quarter goals by Yasmin De Meyer and Rachel Crowder powered the Wolves to a 4-2 victory and set up a date with the Converse Valkyries in the SACC Semifinals Friday evening.

The game started off like the last two meetings as Newberry got the only shot off of the quarter three minutes in but couldn't find another shot, although the play was tilted extremely toward the Wolves attacking side. However, despite the early dominance from the Wolves, Mount Olive would strike first as Morgan Paterson would be awarded a penalty stroke after being taken down by Grace Lee. Paterson would convert the stroke giving the Trojans the lead with under five minutes to play in the second quarter. The Wolves would respond quickly, as Carly Ellis got free behind the Trojans back line and sent in a pass to Lily Drury in front of goal to tie the score up at one as we headed for the halftime break.

The Trojans would once again respond quickly at the beginning of the quarter as Morgan Paterson once again got behind the Wolves defense and beat Lee one-on-one and put Mount Olive back in front just over two minutes into the second half. The Wolves would have several opportunities to equalize as Lily Drury had a shot hit the post, and Marissa Plumber forced a defensive save by the Trojans. With just under three minutes to play in the quarter, Michaella Pirozzi would put a ball in the air that found the stick of Rachel Crowder when it landed and Crowder would tie the game up as we headed to the last 15 minutes of regulation.

In the fourth quarter, it was the Wolves turn to strike early as Tamsin Bangert sent a lob from around midfield into the shooting circle that Yasmin De Meyer tipped into the goal. After the referees deliberated to see whether or not the ball actually touched De Meyer's stick, the goal was allowed and the Scarlet and Gray had their first lead of the game at 3-2. Just under four minutes later, De Meyer would force the issue again as her shot forced a save from Victoria Lee but the rebound found Rachel Crowder who would slot it home and sealed the Wolves second consecutive conference tournament semifinal berth with the 4-2 win.

When asked about her team's performance, Coach Hannah Dave said, "Tonight was a full team effort and we are very excited that we can continue on to the next round. When falling behind, this group never settled. They dug down deep, worked together, and stayed hungry."

With the win, the Wolves advanced to face SACC Regular Season Champion and top-seeded Converse Valkyries in Spartanburg, S.C. in the SACC Tournament Semifinals for a chance to play for a conference crown this weekend. Both semifinal games as well as the championship game will be played on the campus of Converse University. On the other side of the bracket, Belmont Abbey beat Queens 2-0 to set up the other semifinal against two-seed Limestone.
